From the earth beneath our feet.......

Lynda Fox can best be described as an artist in ceramics. She comes from a family of artists and potters. Her farther was a modeller and mould maker for Royal Doulton, based in the the Mother Town of ceramics Burslem, a place that has a lot of influence on her life. Her mother was a fettler and sponger for her grandmother who was a caster at Wheetmans. Her younger brother has his own mould -making business and pottery, Ceramic 77 in Longton, the most Southerly of Stoke-on-Trents five towns. Lynda's older brother is a fine water-colourist and worked for many years as a designer at another famous pottery Johnsons Tiles, whilst her sister was a gilder at Royal Doultons.

Lynda is a native potter and attended the famous Burslem School of Art to study painting with the acclaimed Arthur Berry (Painter-Poet-Playright), it was here that the famous ceramic designer Clarice Cliffe began her studies. From there she moved on to further her studies at the Henry Doulton School of Sculpture and the Elizabeth Frink School of Sculpture.lynda-s2

She is one of the dwindling number of ceramic artists with their own studio in Stoke-on-Trent, the city that once was the heart and soul of British and European Ceramicsand included Royal Doulton, Woods, Price Kensington, Wedgewood, Aynsley, Spode, Minton, Johnson's and many more most of whom no longer exist. The decline has been staggering.

This is Lynda's enviroment, she is maintaining local tradition and her stunning work takes the process further. Her many exhibitions include shows at The Orangerie in Holland Park, London, the Elizabeth Frink School, the Brampton Museum and Litchfield Cathedral.

You could not describe her work as commercial, although she does do commissions. Her distinctive style is out there with the gnomes and fairies that hide in our gardens. The leaves, elfin faces and mythical images that dominate much of her work belong in the books of Tolkien and other visionaries of fantasy worlds, she also gets a lot of inspiration from her own cottage garden.

Lynda pursues her art form to it's limits, modelling, sculpting, glazing, firing etc; she constantly aware of the rich ceramics history of the region she strives to pass it on by running her ever-popular clay workshops for children and adults. She believes the survival of this once great industry may now be back in the hands of the independent potter, it's up to them to pass the legacy on.

Not just a talented ceramicist Lynda is also a musician and singer, among her other talents, she is a percussionist with the ceili band Alfa Alfa that performs regularly around the region, and was a vocalist with the folk/rock outfit Heymaker.
